The first thing you need to learn is how these home screens are working and how one can make good use of them.

The first home screen displayed when you unlock the phone is the Applications menu, which, obviously, shows all the apps.

This is the place where you can start any apps installed on the phone, as well as install new ones.

You can install apps via Nokia Store or other app stores, but you will need to enable a special setting from Settings / Applications / Installations / Allow installations from non-Store sources.

To close an application and remove it from the screen you need to swipe toward the center of the screen from any edge.

The application will be automatically sent on the next home screen, dubbed Open Applications, which acts as a Task Manager.

All applications 'closed' this way can be found on the Open Applications pane, so you can continue working with them when you need them. While on this home screen tap and hold your finger to close all or any of the applications that are still running in the background.

In addition, you can set the phone to automatically close all apps instead of sending them to the Open Applications screen by going to Settings / Device / Display / Swipe down to close app.

Nokia N9 Tips and Tricks (II)

It's been almost a month since Nokia N9 hit shelves and the excitement built around the MeeGo device brings more fans to the Finnish company.

Nokia created almost the perfect symbiosis between a smartphone and a mobile operating system. The way a user interacts with the N9 is simply fabulous, different from anything that's been thrown at users in the last 3-4 years.

Obviously, there are some similarities in the fact that the phone uses technologies embedded in other mobile platforms, but the way they've been integrated is unique and innovative.

We will continue our previous article about Nokia N9's tweaks, because we discover something new every day we spend with the MeeGo-based smartphone.

For those unfamiliar with the phone's layout, the N9 only features three external buttons: two volume keys and a lock/unlock key.

The latter is used to unlock the phone's display everytime you want to use. However, instead of clicking the unlock button on the left side of the phone, simply tap the screen twice and the screen will be unlocked.

If double tapping on the screen does not unlock it, you need to enable this option by going to Settings / Device / Display and use the toggle for the specific feature.

Another interesting tweak is the Quick menu, which provides users the option to quickly access: Phone, Messages, Camera and Browser.

To bring up the Quick menu simply swipe up about 1/3 from the bottom edge of the screen and then slowly swipe down until the shortcuts appears at the base of the screen.

Nokia N9 is a great notifier as the phone displays on the screen all events missed by owners, including missed calls, emails, Facebook or Twitter mentions and more.

A special icon will be displayed on the screen when you have missed a call, or when you have new email. As soon as you unlock the screen double-tapping the “event” will be shown at the base of the screen. Simply tap and hold on the “event” and swipe to the right to get directly to the Phone feature, email Inbox or Facebook account.

Nokia Lumia 800 Goes Official, A Windows Phone 7 Flagship

26 October 2011 - Despite many leaks, Nokia Lumia 800 has officially made its appearance during the launch in the Nokia World 2011 in London today. 

Previously known as Sea Ray, the Nokia Lumia 800 is the Windows Phone flagship by Nokia. It shares the same exterior design with the Nokia N9, but with additional camera shutter button on the bottom right of the phone. It has a smaller display than the N9 to make space for the three obligatory touch buttons (Back, Start and Search) on Windows Phone platform. 

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop touted the Lumia 800 as a “first real Windows Phone.” Spec-wise, the Lumia 800 has 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800) AMOLED display with ClearBlack technology, a 1.4GHz solo-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, 512MB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8-megapixel f/2.2 camera with Carl Zeiss optics and supports HSDPA 14.4Mbps, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1. 

Of course, the Lumia 800 will be running on the latest Windows Phone Mango, along with some exclusive goodies such as free 25GB SkyDrive cloud storage, Nokia Drive turn-by-turn voice navigation free app and Nokia Music with Mix Radio.
