Lenovo Introduces AMD Powered IdeaPad S205 And G475, Priced At RM1299 And RM1099

25 October 2011 - Lenovo is introducing two affordable and portable notebooks - the IdeaPad S205 and Lenovo G475. They are priced at RM1299 and RM1099, respectively. Their portability had not sacrificed performance, as the notebooks come equipped with AMD E-Series Fusion APUs which not only offer faster performance and HD graphics, but promises longer battery life.  

Lenovo Ideapad S205

The S205 weighs just 1.35kg and measures 18mm thick, and is powered by Windows 7 Home Basic. There is an AccuType chiclet keyboard to ensure a better typing experience. Lenovo claims the S205 has six hours of battery life, which is managed by the Lenovo Energy Manager Software 6.0. Other bundled Lenovo software includes VeriFace 4.0 face recognition technology that increase software and Active Protection System which protects your hard disc from sudden drops.  

Lenovo G475

Barely above RM1000 is the Lenovo G475, which is a 14.3-inch notebook that supports up to 2GB DDR3 RAM and 500GB hard disc drive plus a HDMI in/out and an integrated card reader. On the software front, it comes with the Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 built for Windows 7, and with Lenovo's Rapidboot technology, the notebook features a quicker start-up and shutdown. Similar to the S205, there is the Lenovo Energy Manager Software 6.0, OneKey Rescue System for backup and VeriFace 4.0 for security.  

However with the RM1099 price point, it comes with DOS only, so we suspect users may have to fork out extra for the operating system. Both notebooks are currently available now.

Hackers Continue To Target Android Phones

KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile malware continues to be a threat to Android smartphones, according to US-based cybersecurity company Sourcefire Inc. 

"Android smartphones are vulnerable to mobile malware because of its openness, which attracts hackers," said Alex Kirk, senior research analyst at Sourcefire. 

One the best features about the Android OS is that it provides access to a wide range of useful libraries and tools for developers to build rich applications on the platform. 

"But the same openness also attracts hackers to create malware," Kirk explained during his talk at the recently concluded HITB (Hack in the Box) security conference 2011 here. 

One type of malware that is affecting Android smartphones is the SMS trojan. When installed, the trojan will send out premium rate text messages without the owner's knowledge. As a result, the victim ends up with a huge telephone bill, he said. 

The other types of malware detected include those that transform a smartphone into a bot to resend viruses or to execute actions (which are executed remotely) without the user's consent. 

Another means of spreading malware on Android smartphones is via QR (Quick Response) codes. Once users scan the QR code, they are redirected to websites hosting Android trojans. 

Although mobile Android malware is significantly lower than desktop malware, which accounts for 40,000 attacks per day, it is still cause for concern, Kirk explained. 

"This is because Android dominates 50% of the smartphone market based on various research studies. Therefore, users needs to take steps to protect their smartphone," he said. 

As a general rule, Kirk advised users not to download applications from untrusted websites.

Tablets, Smartphones Ownership On The Rise

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian tablet computer and smartphone markets are set to grow exponentially by mid-2012, with tablet ownership projected to reach 75% of digital consumers from 18% currently, and smartphones rising to 89% from 48%, according to a study by market research firm Nielsen Malaysia. 

“The Internet has now become an essential tool and is truly ingrained in many Malaysians' everyday lives and activities. Close to half of netizens in Malaysia use laptops to surf the Internet, but the availability of Internet-connected mobile devices have increased their online dependency. 

“For instance, digital consumers engage in five hours of online activities via their mobile phone, just slightly less time spent compared to playing online games on a personal computer,” Nielsen Malaysia director of customised research, client services Luca Griseri told reporters at a media briefing for the Malaysian Digital Consumer Report 2011. 

Nielsen said more than half of digital consumers in the country use the Internet on a daily basis, and “connecting with people” was cited by 68% as their main reason for going online. Although Nielsen's data showed desktop PCs and laptops were still the dominant devices for accessing the Internet, tablets and smartphones have the most room for growth. Presently, only 3% and 1% of consumers frequently used mobile phones and tablets respectively to access the Internet. 

Moreover, Internet-capable devices have roused users' propensity for multi-tasking. Nielsen found that over two-thirds of digital consumers claimed they watched television and browsed the Internet simultaneously. 

While computers are still the preferred device for simultaneous usage, one out of 10 of Nielsen's survey participants said they watched television and used the Internet at the same time on their mobile phones, and 4% do so via their tablets and eBook readers. 

Griseri also said Malaysia is on the right path toward becoming a digital economy by 2020, but added that a successful digital transformation will require the Government and telco players to cooperate and ensure the country has sufficient infrastructure and network capacity. 

Interviews for the Digital Consumer Report were conducted in June and July, on a total of 1,321 Malaysian consumers aged 15 and above in urban Peninsular Malaysia.

Fresh iPhone/iOS 5 rumors cite Twitter events, vacay days

Tired of speculation about when, exactly, the iPhone 5 and its iOS 5 operating system will appear? No? Well, we've got a couple more clues for you then, you incurable gadgiopath.
The Next Web is reporting that the dates of a couple of upcoming Twitter developer events suggest that Apple will release iOS 5 on or before October 10.
The events, TNW says, "seem to be focusing on the integration of Twitter into Apple's upcoming iOS 5 software." The first is in London on the 10th, and the second is in New York on the 12th. And neither event, TNW reports, is limited to Apple Developer program members. That means attendees won't be under a nondisclosure agreement--so, the theorizing goes, there probably won't be anything to disclose: by then it'll all be out of the iBag.
Of course, these dates jibe with a lot of earlier reports about an early to mid-October launch for iOS 5 and the iPhone 5, including a report from All Things D that pegs the iPhone 5 announcement for the fourth day of the month.
Another clue being offered up today is that Apple is reportedly telling staffers at its Apple Stores that they can't go on vacation during the second week of October (this from AppleInsider). Who's gonna wrangle with the iPhone-buying hordes if Apple-ites are all lolling about at home, wiping fingerprints from their iPads?
"The first block of [blacked out ] dates--the 9th through the 12th--could pertain to the release of iOS 5 for existing iOS device owners on Monday the 10th," says AppleInsider. And "the second block of retail blackout dates--October 14th and 15th--could signal availability of the fifth-generation iPhone hardware by that Friday."
Got all that down on your calendar? Good. My prediction is that we'll have the dates completely nailed down by late October--at which time we'll all start speculating about the launch of the iPhone 6 (after the news breaks that a prototype of the device has gone missing at a bar).
